As many bundle up before heading out into the first big snowstorm of 2021, it's important to keep your furry friends in mind as well.

Dogs typically have a fur coat of their own, in cold winter weather some with shorter hair might need an extra layer. Look for signs of shivering when outside and try to limit exposure as much as possible. Also factor in the dog’s age when determining how long to let your pup play in the snow; very young and very old dogs may be more sensitive to cold temperatures and should be watched more closely.

Dog walkers should also keep an eye out for any salt on sidewalks and make sure pets never ingest it. While the salt may taste fine to the pup, the chemicals are bad for their body. The salt also may irritate their paws so booties or wiping off their paws after coming back inside are good methods for protection.

A good rule of thumb recommended by the Chemung County Humane Society and SPCA is to limit your pets’ exposure to the elements to keep them comfortable and healthy!
